Finding Motivation Within

Updated: Nov 21, 2020

I've been asked many times, “how to stay motivated”. That's always difficult for me to help with because I believe each individual has to find their own motivation within themselves and their own reasoning for doing what they do and for working hard. But here's a perspective that absolutely changed the game for me: treating every task as an opportunity and a privilege that many around the world don't have.

Studying is tough and can get boring at times? I owe it to the thousands of children around the globe who do not have access to education, to make the most out of the opportunities I have and to not waste them. I get to study whilst, unfortunately, many do not.

Working out can feel like a chore at times, and going for a run is too much effort? Well, many can't walk and dream of being able to. I get to use my arms and legs whilst others can't, so how can I be ungrateful?

Family relations are stressful? Well, so many people around us are alone and yearn for people in their lives. So, how can we take for granted the friends and family we are blessed with?

I've applied this attitude to everything in my life and, since then, motivation has never been lacking. It may not work for everyone. But, for me, this is my internal dialogue when I don't have the energy or will to overcome the task or workload in front of me. I do it, not because I have to but because I can.

When you stop seeing tasks as burdens, obligations and chores, and instead see them as opportunities, gifts and privileges, you feel a renewed desire to get on with them. You not only feel motivated but also grateful and blessed.

I do it, not because I have to but because I can.
